Theodore OConnor is the latest victim of America’s fixation on Olympic glory at the Beijing Games in 2008. For years now competitors have been focussed on nothing but progressing their Olympic dream: making the long-list selection, making the short list, making the pool, and the holy grail, making the team. Most do it voluntarily - poor Theodore OConnor didn’t even get the choice!

Olympic hopefully give up everything: jobs, life, friends, balance: for that holy-grail of sporting success and maybe celebrity status. Most of course fail: that’s the nature of top level sports: but what about the unsung heroes: the horses of the equestrian team: who get acknowledged as part of the team but no one ever asked them whether or not they wanted to train and train, travel to China, and then probably never return home because of the quarantine regulations won’t allow them back into the country after a trip to a disease ridden country such as China

Theodore OConnor had been expected to do well in US Equestrian’s Eventing team: he was Amerca’s eventing champion - but an ill-judged dash for freedom caused a gash on his leg which led to his being put down - at least now maybe he’s gone to a quieter place.
