MOMO Syndrome is an acronym of the main elements of the disorder Macrosomia , Obesity, Macrocephaly and Ocular abnormalities. MOMO Syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by excessive weight gain and assoicated obesity problems with only a handful of sufferers identified world-wide. Archie Thompson was born a normal weight child, but my 24 months weighed over 84 pounds. Despite eating normally for his age Archie Thompson put on huge amounts of weight because of MOMO Syndrome. Given that only 4 children have been diagnosed with MOMO syndrome you wonder what has caused this strange new disease. Maybe its not actually a new disease just something that has not been identified before. While normal weight people obsess about getting thinner or parents whose children rarely walk anywhere wonder why their children are suffering from childhood obesity, my heart goes out for people such as Archie Thompson’s parents who have to deal with a real life threatening disease with little information and not knowing how to fix the problem. So if your kids are getting overweight - get on and do something about it; its not so much the food they eat, its the lifestyle; kids used to walk or cycle to school: stop running your kids around the block in the car; you can save gas and get them fit! Set an example and get out an get walking yourself. Take public transit and and walk to the stop.
