Point Montara Lighthouse: give it back says Cape Cod! Excuse me you have our lighthouse! The Wellfleet Harbor, Cape Code lighthouse was believed removed and destroyed in 1925’s but recently has turned up again: in California. A lighthouse enthusiast has found the paperwork that indicates the lighthouse was moved to Point Monara: San Francisco! Now owned by California State Parks the historic Point Montara LIghthouse is only about 25 miles south of San Francisco on a spectacular piece of coast. No mention on their website that the lighthouse: which is listed as dating from the 1880’s was replaced by the Wellfleet lighthouse later
The Point Montara Lighthouse is actually run as a Youth Hostel so you can stay in this historical curiosity for as little as $20/night. That’s a first: I didn’t know of any interesting buidings being used as hostels in the US. In Europe I have stayed in a mill (Winchester England), a castle (Germany), a boat (Stockholm). In Australia you can get in contact with your convict roots and stay in a prison in Fremantle. Or maybe an-ex railway station in Sydney: very centrally located that one but the parking is rubbish! So I guess the latest revelation will just add charm to the Point Montara lighthouse hostel: hopefully the Cap Codders don’t want their light house back anytime soon!
