Behavioral targeting trying to improve on the current model of analyzing a website’s content and bringing you content sensitive advertising - the best known example of which is Google’s Adsense.
So rather than focusing on th website’s content behavioral targeting focuses on the readers trip thru the internet. If Bob checks out a travel blog on Bali, a hotel site for Asia and America Airlines flight bookings -its a fair bit that he may be interested in some travel insurance or luggage.
Thats the theory but there is a big big problem with Behavioral targeting, and that’s the implementation. To find the track that the consumer takes thru hyper-space the advertiser needs to partner with your friendly ISP: which is exactly what Nebuform did partnering with the large Charter ISP- quietly switched on the behavioral targeting system. They did change their TOS and allow consumer to opt-out: but how many consumer understand context sensitive never mind behavioral targeting - so this is a little underhand, to be understated
