Which top fuel efficient cars to buy is the question. As oil prices keep on going on American car makers are finallly waking up to something that the rest of the world discovered back in the 1970’s with the first oil crises. Now however that the largest economy is feeling the pain maybe Read the rest of this entry »

Anjali Datta is a bright kid: she has the highest GPA in her graduating class at Grapevine High School, but she can’t be valedictorian and get the college scholarship which goes with the title. Why! Because the officials can’t bend the rules that she should have taken her course in 4 years, when if fact she only took 3. Read the rest of this entry »

Octagon Global Recruiting ran an ad during the big finale of Lost: did you pick up on the fine print? Yes they want volunteers - big hint in San Diego at the same time that Comic Con is on: the world’s largest Comic Convention! Yes its all a tie in to Lost and Comics - and interesting cross-over in my opinion! Read the rest of this entry »

Solazyme is talking about making algae oil also known as algal fuel commercially within 3 years. The small Californian firm has been featured on PBS regarding its claims that it can make economically viable oil. Of course it may well do so: as long as oil remains about US$100 / barrel a whole raft of alternative technologies become financially viable, as does finding more oil itself Read the rest of this entry »

The Scripps 2008 National Spelling Bee is on again: with the run up to the Grand Final on May 30. Now in its 81st year the Spelling Bee puts 12 year olds on live TV which is simulcast on ESPN and ABC. Friday will see the championship rounds on Friday night. The Spelling Bee although called the “Scripts 2008 National Spelling Bee” actually allows international competitors: but then off course they have to be aware of the oddities of US spelling versus English spelling. In fact I read that this year’s Scripps Spelling Bee even included the word “abrazo” which the last time I checked was Spanish (meaning embrace). Read the rest of this entry »

So who is Linda Holliday and should you care. So normally the “news” of the trashy side of US media concentrates on the no-brains, no-names 20 somethings who have big tits, long hair, little between the ears and a surname which is the same as a very large hotel chain. However this is different; Linda Holliday is: wait for it; over 40 - no kidding! She has children, and she may (dramatic pause) not even had any plastic surgery, OK that was a little over the top. And why is Linda Holliday the talk of the moment on the internet: frankly I have no idea Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve wanted to go to Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam for a long time: but the recent Phu Quoc UFO headlines really annoyed me. Phu Quoc is a beautiful tropical island in to the south Vietnam, several hundred kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon. This is mindless sensationalism at its worst: the facts are that an explosion occurred in the air above the northern, lightly populated part of the island. So to date there has been no definitive identification of what is almost certainly a piece of space junk, obsolete satellite or similar. So not the aliens aren’t landing in Vietnam’s beautiful Phu Quoc island. Maybe the Vietnamese military lost a bit of hardware. Read the rest of this entry »

Wanna be footballer Calvin Schmidtke has been dropped from Washington State because of the pending criminal charges against him. It is totally beyond me America’s obsession with wanna be sports starts like Calvin Schmidtke. I say wanna be because any committed sportsman wouldn’t be doing drugs and alcohol in the first place.

Anyone who has attempted to do a physical activity during or after a session with alcoholic drinks know that their performance plummets. There’s really nothing more unpleasant than trying to take part in cardiovascular exercise with a hangover: you are already dehydrated so pushing your body is just going to make it worse - much worse. The recent case of a woman in Memphis dying after power was accidentally lost to her iron lung really highlights what the scare mongers of vaccination campaigns like to forget: their benefits far out weight their disadvantages. Diane Ordell had been confined to a 2m coffin-like iron long to keep her alive for 58 or her 61 years, after contracting polio at the age of 3 just three years before the vaccine largely eradicated the disease in the Western World.
